Home ownership 'a top priority'
Home ownership is more important to Britons than getting married or having children, a survey of potential buyers has shown.
The housebuilder Barratt Developments said, around 71% of those polled rate owning a property as eight on the scale of 10.
Only 46% of 2,905 potential buyers rate getting married as a priority, while 44% gave a high score to parenthood.
Britons also consider job satisfaction nearly as important as owning a home, with 68% of people rating it as eight out of 10. Nearly seven in 10 (69%) say the area in which they live is important.
Only 24% think taking holidays abroad is important and more than a quarter say having an active social life is a priority.
Mark Clare, chief executive of Barratt Developments, said: "These results demonstrate that the economic problems of the last three years have not diminished the huge appetite for home ownership in Britain."
According to the survey, 42% consider saving a large sum as the biggest barrier to owning a property, followed by finding a suitable property at 41%. Nearly a third think getting a mortgage is a major problem.
